Leave alone
Underwater, see them seething while you
Live alone
Anytime I'll show you
Live alone
You'll be safe and sound, at least calmed down if you
Leave alone
And forget the way back
They're aching to be seen
And wanna live the dream
When it's no longer
Co co co co contagious
Drop everything behind
Impervious to vibes
And it is no more
Co co co co contagious
Some things get loud without being said
Gets all of us tangled, with no escape
No way to get around it
Unless you go and dive in
Some things are seen without being shown
They drown our senses with feelings and thoughts
No way to get around it
It will eat you whole (because)
They're aching to be seen
And wanna live the dream
When it's no longer
Co co co co contagious
Drop everything behind
Impervious to vibes
And it is no more
Co co co co contagious
They crawl for attention
Another dimension
Where it's no longer
Co co co co contagious
Drop everything behind
Impervious to vibes
And it is no more
Co co co co contagious
Live alone, underwater I can see you when you fall
It's been a long time (ad lib.)

"CONTAGIOUS" by Pauline
"Leave alone, and forget the way back"
Being hyper empathetic is... complicated. Moments of wakefulness can become unbearable when we can no longer keep the necessary distance from the emotions of others, and hyper-connection to the news and social media is an incredibly dangerous trap when emotional defenses have given way.
This song is about how we emotionally "leak" over each other, often without realizing it, and those moments when, by absorbing everyone else's unhappiness, our vision of the world becomes so dark that dissociation is the only way not to go crazy. That strange feeling of living as if it were underwater, putting the world and our own emotions in a little padded box where they may be locked up forever but where they won't stop us from living.
This song was born out of a moment of waiting in our studio while we were going through the dozens (hundreds? – you haven't heard the last of us ^^) pre pre pre demos archived in a monster-folder. "Contagious" was just a 30-second loop with a chorus melody at the time. Everything else appeared almost instantly as soon as it came out of the box, and we embellished it in the weeks that followed, especially by calling the immeasurable Alexandre Saada (who had collaborated with us on various versions of "Cielo Drive" that is particularly close to our hearts) to bring the ethereal and effortless complexity of the final piano part. A big thank you to him. Thanks also to Norah who, while we were looking for an alternative melody, accidentally (or not) suggested this wonderful little tune that you can hear at the end fo the track (which she recorded herself in the process)
A huge thank you also, as usual, to our national treasure Iseo Furudoi, fifth Beatles of his state (yes there are only 3 of us, we're French, and, well, anyway, but damn).
Love,
